About Mammography

Mammography uses a low dose x-ray for either screening for or diagnosis of breast disease.

What To Expect

The breast tissue is gently compressed by the mammography unit and low dose x-rays are used to produce two images of the breast tissue on each side of the chest.

Preparation

None required.

Criteria for Screening Mammography

  1. Male or female over the age of 40.
  2. No established diagnosis of breast cancer or pre-malignant breast condition (not LCIS,DCIS).
  3. No evidence of metastatic malignancy which may have originated in the breast.
  4. No previous augmentation mammoplasty.
  5. No breast cyst aspiration or galactogram within the past year.
  6. No other breast intervention (e.g. biopsy, surgery, reduction, removal of implants) in the past three years (this includes FNA and core biopsy and mammotome and is not limited to these present procedures).
  7. No breast signs within the past year.
  8. No breast symptoms which are the reason for the examination.
  9. No follow up diagnostic imaging has been suggested.
